On Request

Filed under: all photos, lake superior, sunrise - sunset — Pete @ 2:19 pm

…for blue2go. It’s from last year, but it’s probably the best picture I have right now of the curve of Park Point. I realized out of the 10,000 pictures I have only about 2 that fit that category.

On The Other Side

…Is the “Grand Marais Recreation Area” aka campground. Except it’s more like a glorified campground. I’m pretty sure they have a pool/hot tub, stores, and then all the normal campground stuff. I went up crawling around on the rocks for a while, and all I have to say is: beware of all the seagulls.

Gooseberry Falls

Filed under: all photos, lake superior, parks — Pete @ 1:54 pm

It feels really good to be home. Not that there’s anything wrong with Grand Marais, MN, it’s just a little small, a little boring, and going out to eat by yourself just isn’t fun. And who really likes training for work? Anywho- on my way up there I made a stop at Gooseberry Falls ..where I went to take some of the crashing wave pictures. I added the second picture here just for scale to this picture. Just because you can’t tell how big they really were, unless you’re unless you were there. Don’t worry though, I’ll get over how cool they are soon…One good thing about Grand Marais is that the city is right on Lake Superior, so I have some pretty cool pictures from there. They’ll be posted in the next couple days…until then :) This is by the picnic area at Gooseberry. Notice all the driftwood that’s floated in…

Sunlit Smoke 2005-05-21

Okay, I’m posting two pictures that I really like, even though I find them a bit similar. The first is from yesterday morning, I was going to post it along with another one from yesterday morning, but changed my mind because I like this second picture too much….and I’m going out of town for the next couple days (I should be posting again by Thursday) and my trip up the North Shore to the Canadian border (or close enough) should yield enough pictures to keep me posting pictures from my trip once I’m back.

Backlit by Sunrise 2005-05-22

I was driving along this little dirt road (still in town, just by the industrial/train tracks by the lake) and a family of mallards comes waddling across the road. I’d say there was at least six baby mallards. So I grab my camera off the seat next to me, stop my car, and roll down my window, but by this time they’re across the road and starting to go into the grass. The mom had quite the head start on them into the taller grass, so the photographer in me takes over the side of my brain that thinks things through. I get out of my car, thinking that if I was taller I could get a picture of the babies and the mom in the grass, but I wasn’t close enough (they’re small!). So I take about two steps towards the other side of this little road and the mom notices me. She starts running through the grass in a wide circle, flapping her wings, and making so much noise it sounded as if someone was trying to kill her. Well she got back onto the road before I realized that she was coming after me (no comments needed on how quick I am), and started moving significantly faster once she did. The poor thing was going crazy. I, and I have no idea why, got scared (I’m laughing at myself right now) so I backstepped and tried to get back into my car, but my door was locked. The window was still rolled down, so I sat on my windowsil and started climbing through my window before I realized what I was doing. I was running from a duck no bigger than a football. So I unlocked my car, climbed in, and rolled up my window while the crazy mallard was circling my car, yelling death threats. Then I called myself a dumbass.

Moral of the story, don’t work the two bussiest night shifts in a row with your boss, especially when you’re overly tired, it leaves you buggy, and not thinking strait….or maybe you just shouldn’t threaten a mom and her babies.

Peaceful

Filed under: all photos, bridges, lake superior, sunrise - sunset — Pete @ 6:34 am

It’s beautifully calm this morning on Lake Superior, with the fog disappearing in the morning sun. And, for the record, there is nothing more calming/relaxing/healing than a peaceful sunrise.

Scale

Looking just at the pictures of the crashing waves themselves, you can’t really tell just how big they really are. So…

Crashing Waves (Big Ones)

Filed under: all photos, lake superior, waves — Pete @ 5:09 pm

I was playing in photoshop, and I found this thing, equalize. A lot of my photos didn’t have enough contrast between the waves and the sky, and was made even more obvious in these next pictures (when the crashes got even bigger). But…this equalize thing pretty much fixed that. It leaves the pictures grainy, but I still like the effect (a lot) and how much it then contrasts against the sky.
